Well-behaved online load balancing against strategic jobs

چکیده

In the online load balancing problem on related machines, we have a set of jobs (with different sizes) arriving online, and task is to assign each job machine immediately upon its arrival, so as minimize makespan, i.e., maximum completion time. classic mechanism design problems, assume that are controlled by selfish agents, with sizes being their private information. Each (agent) aims at minimizing own cost, which time plus payment charged mechanism. Truthful mechanisms guaranteeing every minimizes cost reporting true size been well studied (Aspnes et al. JACM 44(3):486–504, 1997, Feldman in: EC, 2017). this paper, study truthful well-behaved (machine higher speed has larger workload). Good behavior important it guarantees fairness between machines implies truthfulness in some cases when agents. Unfortunately, existing not behaved. We first show guarantee producing schedule, any algorithm (even non-truthful) competitive ratio least $$\varOmega (\sqrt{m})$$ , where m number machines. Then, propose produces schedule almost well-behaved. our $$O(\log m)$$ . Moreover, for case bounded, improves O(1). Interestingly, several actually against

Dynamic Load Balancing in MPI Jobs

There are at least three dimensions of overhead to be considered by any parallel job scheduling algorithm: load balancing, synchronization, and communication overhead. In this work we first study several heuristics to choose the next to run from a global processes queue. After that we present a mechanism to decide at runtime weather to apply Local process queue per processor or Global processes...

Distributed strategic interleaving with load balancing

In a previous paper, we developed an algebraic theory of threads, interleaving of threads, and interaction of threads with services. In the current paper, we assume that the threads and services are distributed over the nodes of a network. We extend the theory developed so far to the distributed case by introducing distributed interleaving strategies that support explicit thread migration and s...

Online and Random-order Load Balancing Simultaneously

We consider the problem of online load balancing under lp-norms: sequential jobs need to be assigned to one of the machines and the goal is to minimize the lp-norm of the machine loads. This generalizes the classical problem of scheduling for makespan minimization (case l∞) and has been thoroughly studied. However, despite the recent push for beyond worst-case analyses, no such results are know...

Offline file assignments for online load balancing

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t We study a novel load balancing problem that arises in web search engines. The problem is a combination of an offline assignment problem, where files need to be (copied and) assigned to machines, and an online load balancing problem, where requests ask for specific files and need to be assigned to a corresponding machine, whose load is increased by this. We...

Online Vector Scheduling and Generalized Load Balancing

We give a polynomial time reduction from vector scheduling problem (VS) to generalized load balancing problem (GLB). This reduction gives the first non-trivial online algorithm for VS where vectors come in an online fashion. The online algorithm is very simple in that each vector only needs to minimize the Lln(md) norm of the resulting load when it comes, where m is the number of partitions and...
